HCCH Conference on International Litigation in the Asia Pacific Region Was Held in Wuhan

On September 23-24, 2013, HCCH conference on international litigation in the Asia Pacific region was held in Wuhan. This conference was jointly organized by HCCH, Asia-Pacific regional office of HCCH and Wuhan university institute of international law. More than 40 government officials, judges, experts and scholars from China, Australia, Cambodia, Japan, Korea, India, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and other countries attended the meeting. In opening ceremony, Marta Pertegás, the first secretary of HCCH, Zhu Yong from the Asia-Pacific regional office of HCCH, Chen Peijie, the deputy director of The Department of Treaty and Law of ministry of foreign affairs of the People’s Republic of China, and the Luo Yuting, the leader of Wuhan university, delivered the speeches. Professor Xiao Yongping, Professor Guo Yujun, Doctor Gan Yong, and Doctor Liang Wenwen attended the meeting as the Invited experts.
Professor Xiao Yongping hosted the " the influence of 2005 Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements on the countries in the Asia-Pacific region and regional legislation" panel discussion. Professor Guo made a special speech which suggested that scholars in the Asia-Pacific region should strengthen the academic contact and push the corporation in international jurisdiction and recognition and enforcement of foreign judgment.
On the conference, the implementation issue of 2005 Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements and recognition and enforcement of foreign judgment involving the agreements were discussed. And the conference put forward that the one aim of 2005 Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements was avoiding the inconvenience of cross-border litigation. Some countries supported to this convention. During the meeting, the delegates introduced the legislation of jurisdiction and recognition and enforcement of foreign judgment in their respective countries. All delegates reached consensus that 2005 Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements will simplify the existing international litigation. The establishment of Asia-Pacific regional expert working group which can promote the work of HCCH in Asia-Pacific region was suggested on the conference.
HCCH, Hague Conference on Private International Law, is the preeminent Non-governmental organization in the area of private international law. This conference is the first time that HCCH jointly organized an international academic conference with Chinese academic institute. The success of the conference would promote the work of HCCH, and expand the influence of Wuhan university institute of international law.
